Buffett declared that he intended to donate over 80 percent of his fortune to charitable causes. He raised the amount to 99.9 percent by 2020. The principal beneficiary was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife, Melinda--which is focused on global health and education; Bill and Buffett had maintained a close relationship since the beginning of the 1990s. Other charities that received donations included those run by Buffett's children and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his late wife. It was focused on women's reproductive rights and funded college scholarship programmes. In the year 2010, Buffett and Gates created the Giving Pledge. This pledge allowed other wealthy individuals to contribute a significant portion of their wealth to charitable causes.
