LadyLady Starlight, a performance artist, was introduced to Gaga during the time. Gaga was signed to Streamline Records by Vince Herbert in 2007 following her performance at Lollapalooza Festival 2007. Gaga signed a music publishing contract with Sony/ATV after having been an apprentice writer at Famous Music Publishing. She was then hired to compose songs for the support of Britney Spears, labelmates New Kids on the Block and Fergie. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. Gaga's 2008 debut album 'The Fame' received lukewarm media reception. Gaga went on tour in Europe and in the US to promote her debut album. However, it was not until 2009's smash hit "Just Dance" that the attention of the mainstream was paid to her music. Gaga suffered a labral tear in her right hip which she had been nursing secretly for a number of weeks in hope that she would be able to continue her tour. She was unable to walk after a concert in Toronto and was in severe pain. The tour was stopped.
